Net-Free

Monday, October 7th, 2013

Spent some time yesterday with some folks who are internet- and computer-free. They’re on the older side, and therefore come from a pre-computer time, so they haven’t spent any time with one. Also, there seems to be a slight tinge of fear in their eyes when anything computer- or internet-related comes up in conversation, so I think it’s safe to assume that they are a wee bit fearful of the idea, too. And hey, I don’t blame ‘em. That unknown world can be pretty damned scary.
But it did make me wonder — how would I react to suddenly going internet-free? Considering the nature of what I do, it’s logistically an impossibility, but regardless…how would I deal without my good friend, Firefox, and all the wonders he contains within?

Frankly, probably the biggest thing would be the lack of communication with friends who are far away. I’d have to resort to good old pen and paper letters. So any news that arrived would already be a week late, if not more.

The next thing would be the lack of instantaneous news updates. We all know what Twitter has done for the spread of news, don’t we? Something major happens somewhere, and people are Tweeting about it before you know it. Without the internet, you’d have to wait for the next radio news broadcast, or the 6:00 evening TV news.

Then, I know I’d certainly bemoan the inability to fact-check any single detail in an instant. The name of the supporting actor in the latest big-screen blockbuster? What about finding out how a word is spelled? Or the translation of a word into English? Facts? Figures? Historical Events? The list goes on and on.

And I’m not even going to get in to things like streaming movies and TV shows, buying e-books, online shopping in general, and Pinterest.

‘Cause I mean, really.

You know, I hadn’t thought *that* one through. Cutting my Pinterest addiction would probably kill me. Not a pretty thought.

Nope, even though at times it’s a huge time suck and can make us lose track of hours at a time, in the grand scheme of things, it would be SO HARD to go without internet for any major length of time.

My house would probably be cleaner, though. :/
