Hamsters And Pickles

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

…have nothing to do with this post.

We’re in the middle of another deep freeze (thanks, Mom Nature!!) and apparently my brain has also been affected by the cold.

On that note, I am crawling into my bed and snuggling under the big duvet.

I would like to report something exciting, but being knocked up has pretty much trumped all else at the moment. Saturday will involve examining baby paraphernalia with B.E. (ie. starting a registry and selecting the items we’d like), Sunday will involve home-type stuff, and Monday will herald the start of another project. Stay tuned!

Feeling Human

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Last night gave me a half-decent night’s sleep, and the Offspring went to school with a minimum of fuss this morning. Not bad.

Higher Learning is now in the hands of the E.E., and so today I am focusing my energy on cleaning my office, doing laundry and generally tidying the house. In a day or two I think I will pull out an old story that is written, but is too short and needs to be expanded (and probably *could* be expanded to full novel length — ie. 50K words, even!). I like the premise and think the plot is pretty strong, so it’s just a matter of re-envisioning it to deepen and strengthen the story.

I like the idea of turning this into my first full-length novel. It would be a real challenge, but I think it would be very satisfying. The bare bones are there, it just needs a lot of flesh to fill it in.

I will keep you posted.

On that note, however, I need to get the first load of laundry for the day in the machine. Oh, what a life of glamour!

Catch you on the flip side, gang!

Clan Starr went road-tripping this past weekend, and while we had great fun, it’s awesome to be home again — despite the freezing rain going on.

Can I tell you just how glad I am that school wasn’t cancelled today? The Offspring had vinegar in her veins this morning or something, ’cause boy was she grouchy. Sheesh. I’m SO glad I was able to shuffle her off to school.

In the meantime, the book has been critted (thank you, D!) and I’m off to tweak and polish and EMAIL! Then it’ll be in the hands of the Editor Extraordinaire and I will do some housecleaning and eventually look at another project. Ah, the joys…

Before I get started, though, I think I need a mid-morning snack for fortification. :)

Without a half-finished book hanging over my head, I feel somewhat lost. At least I have for the past day or so. Higher Learning is off, awaiting a critique from a most excellent pair of eyes, and then it’ll come back for me to perform surgery upon. It’s not quite the same feeling as sending a book off to the Editor Extraordinaire, but it’s similar.

In the meantime, I have things I could do (and in fact, I have actually done some of them) but don’t seem to have a whole lot of energy to do them. (Gestating might have an effect, there, actually. :P )

But regardless, clan Starr is road-tripping this weekend, with a par-tay for Yours Truly’s dear brother, and there is some preparation involved in that. But anyway. Here I ramble. Obviously I’m also rather tired and should probably get to bed.

At 9:30 in the evening.

Dear God, I’m such a party animal.

*insert rolling of eyeballs here*

Done, Done, Done!

Monday, January 18th, 2010

At 34,859 words, the first full draft of Higher Learning is now complete. W00T!

The next thing to do is a re-read and a tweak, and then it’s off for a fresh pair of eyes to look at. Depending on the feedback, there’ll probably be a ton of stuff for me to fix (because it *is* mostly mule puke anyway), but once it’s all done and polished again, it’s OFF to my editor extraordinaire!

Then I’m taking a day or two to clean up this office-cum-baby’s room, and after that, it’s back to the drawing board to see what’s going where next!

Grind, Grind, Grind

(No, not my teeth.)

After a busy weekend involving a baby shower (not for me), cleaning, a lunch out and other various activities, I’m ready for Monday to be here. It’s back to routine time again. Thankfully, I have nowhere urgent to go today (other than perhaps a jaunt to the post office…) so I can work on the story, do laundry, and wear sweatpants all day.

Yep, high-class me.

I wish I had something new to report, but I’m still waiting to hear of Lovely’s fate and nothing else is out in the world (at this moment). I know, I know. Producing. Chop-chop. I’m back at it…

1308 Words

Another bigger chunk yesterday. I am hoping that at this rate, I will be done this book soon. The climax (heh) is on the horizon.

But before I get onto that this morning, it’s time for second breakfast. Junior dictates it. Honest. :D

A little more firmly back in the saddle again, folks. (Er…that was yesterday’s count, BTW.)

I have no major plans to go far today (at least until the evening) so I shall attempt to add more. We’ll see what happens.

Lethargy’s still got a bit of a hold on me, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it hangs on for a while (oh, six more months or so…), but it does make it tough to try and accomplish things. I have already promised myself that when Higher Learning is finally done and emailed off, I am taking a couple of days to gut/reorganize/clean this cesspool of an office. It’s about time, I know, especially if it’s going to eventually double as Junior’s room.

(No “I told you so”s necessary, B.E. ;) )

However, that is later, not now. Now is the time to end the story with a bang, so to speak. Heh.

And I’ll Take A Skull Tattoo To Go With Those Ear Piercings, Please

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

I am at a loss.

Perhaps you, Gentle Readers, will be able to help me out.

Where does one go nowadays if one wants basic ear piercing?

There’s no hurry, as the Kidlet won’t be getting hers done until she turns ten (at least, that was the agreement made earlier — hey, I couldn’t get mine done until I was twelve. I think she’s getting a bargain, myself), but the situation has started me thinking.

The Mater took me to an Eaton’s department store, if I remember correctly. The ladies in the jewelry department used to do ear piercing, but I don’t think they do that anymore in department stores (and Eaton’s is long-gone, anyway). I know places like the accessory store Ardene do it, but I wonder about the sanitary levels in those shops.

So that brings me to my current dilemma. Do we actually need to step into a tattoo/piercing shop to get the Kidlet’s ears done?? On the plus side, I’m willing to bet that the sterilization and sanitation techniques in the licensed, above-board places would be excellent, but on the other hand — a tattoo parlour? Really??

What do you guys think? Anybody out there with a kid who’s recently had ears pierced? Where did you go? Any suggestions? I’ll definitely file them away until the appropriate time.

Molasses In January

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

That’s about right.

I have a list of things that I would like to do around the house today. If I were a betting gal, I would bet against me getting it all done, because it’s a bit dramatic of a list. I may also be feeling a tad better (hence the creation of the list in the first place) but I don’t want to do too much and subsequently wear myself out. Ugh.

Well, I do at least have laundry underway, so that’s one step in the right direction. I’m just going to do what I can, I suppose, and whatever gets crossed off the list gets crossed off the list. There’s always tomorrow.

At least the sun is shining today, which feels nice, and I will break at lunchtime from whichever task is underway and take a jaunty stroll down to the library and post office. Until then, I think a second cup of coffee (decaf, this time) is called for, and perhaps an eeny-meeny-miney-moe approach to the To-Do list.

Hey, whatever works.
